Gauntlets of the Gods is a 12-week forearm specialisation block for a lifter who already trains hard and has run out of patience with forearms that will not grow. It is not a chapter bolted onto an arm day. It is a complete system: 296 hard sets across four phases, three to four exposures a week attached to sessions you already do, a progression engine that decides the next load for you, and a readiness gate that decides whether today's session happens at all. Every function the forearm has is programmed — wrist flexion, wrist extension, finger flexion, neutral-grip elbow flexion, pronation, supination and deviation — and the block is judged in millimetres on Week 0, 4, 8 and 12, not in how the pump felt.

Who This Guide Is For

Written for lifters with two or more years of consistent hard training, a working weekly split of at least four days, and the ability to add 18 to 32 minutes to three sessions a week. It assumes painless wrist range, clean elbows, seven hours of sleep, protein at 1.6 to 2.2 g per kg and calories at or above maintenance — the five baseline requirements the guide sets before Week 1. It is not for beginners, anyone with an unresolved wrist or elbow problem, or anyone training under four days a week.

Why don't forearms grow from normal training?

Two reasons the guide spells out. First, most lifters only train one function. A wrist curl moves the hand at the wrist; a finger roll opens and closes the fingers. They train different muscles, and the finger flexors — flexor digitorum superficialis and profundus — are the muscles behind real grip and the most neglected mass driver on the flexor side. Wrist curls barely touch them. Second, the extensor debt. Every time you hold a bar, a dumbbell or a handle, the flexors and fingers work; across a training career that is tens of thousands of loaded contractions. The extensors get almost none of it, because nothing you hold asks them to open the hand against resistance. That is why the back of most forearms is flat while the front is not, and why this block runs extensor volume at 21.9 percent against flexor volume at 24 percent. Add the brachioradialis — the single biggest visual win, visible from every angle — and you have the map the programme is built on.

How is the 12-week forearm protocol structured?

Four phases with their own volume curve. The Forging (Weeks 1-3) builds tissue tolerance and locks execution at 18 to 21 weekly sets with no intensity techniques — the only phase where leaving reps behind is the instruction. The Accumulation (Weeks 4-6) expands volume to 24 to 29 sets, adds a ten-minute Sunday micro-dose of rotation and deviation work, and introduces myo-reps on one movement. The Tempering (Weeks 7-9) opens with the Anneal — half volume, RIR 3, no techniques, and not optional — then intensifies to 32 sets with rest-pause, lengthened partials and mechanical drops on final sets only. The Ascension (Weeks 10-12) peaks at 36 sets in Week 11, then tapers to 40 percent for the Week 12 measurement. Three full sessions a week sit after push, legs and arms — never before anything — with 48 hours between each. Should you use lifting straps during a forearm block?

Yes, on every heavy pull, for the whole 12 weeks — the guide calls this the single most important line in the document. Your grip is being specialised on three other days. Letting it also be the limiting factor in rows and deadlifts is how you get an overuse injury and no growth. The same logic runs through the other five technical distinctions that decide the block: full range beats heavy range, because the lengthened position is where the useful tension is and the short range at the wrist means there is nothing left to give away; grip position changes the muscle, which is why hammer and reverse curls belong in a forearm programme; the extensors need roughly half the flexor load or the movement is being cheated with forearm lift; and momentum is the default failure, so every wrist movement is braced against a bench or thigh.

How do you know if the forearm programme is working?

Measure, do not admire. The widest point of the relaxed forearm, marked with a pen on Week 0, measured relaxed and flexed in millimetres on Week 0, 4, 8 and 12 only — weekly measuring tells you nothing but your hydration. On an advanced lifter, 3 to 8 mm on the relaxed measurement across 12 weeks is a real outcome, and the guide is direct that anyone promising more is selling you something. Between checkpoints, the Progression Engine runs four gates after every session and the Readiness Gate grades every session green, amber or red from morning grip, elbow ache and wrist range before you touch a bar. Pain is not a training variable; it is a stop sign. Are wrist curls enough to build bigger forearms?

No. Wrist curls train wrist flexion, which is one of eight functions the forearm has. They barely touch the deep finger flexors that fill the upper third of the forearm and drive real grip, and they do nothing for the extensors on the back of the forearm or the brachioradialis on top. The programme allocates its 296 sets across wrist flexion, finger flexion, wrist extension, brachioradialis, pronation, supination and deviation, with no function below 4 percent of the block.

How often should you train forearms for growth?

Three full sessions a week, rising to four exposures from Week 4 with a ten-minute Sunday micro-dose. Small muscles with short recovery windows tolerate 48-hour turnarounds that a quad never would, and three exposures spread the weekly volume without any single session becoming junk. Weekly volume runs from 18 to 36 direct hard sets — well above the 8 to 14 maintenance window — because a specialisation block is temporary, and everything else in the week gets pulled back to pay for it.

Why do my elbows hurt when I train forearms?

Because tendon and connective tissue adapt on a slower clock than muscle. Inner-elbow ache usually means flexor and finger-flexor tendon load has risen faster than the tissue adapted; outer-elbow ache usually means extensor tendon overload from too much load on wrist extension or reverse curls. The guide's Readiness Gate grades each before every session and gives a specific response — cut finger-roll and hold volume by half, or drop extensor load 30 percent and take reps to 20-25 — while sharp or point pain, or any numbness or tingling, stops direct work and gets assessed by a clinician.

How much can forearms grow in 12 weeks?

On an advanced lifter, 3 to 8 mm on the relaxed measurement across 12 weeks is a real outcome. Anyone promising more than that is selling you something. The block will not change your wrist joint, bone width or the length of your muscle bellies — only the muscle is trainable, so only the muscle is programmed — and the result is judged against the Week 0 tape reading in the same spot on the same morning, never against a photo you liked.
