What FFMI actually measures

FFMI is your lean mass in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. Normalised FFMI adjusts for height so tall and short people can be compared on the same scale. The research that popularised it found natural, drug free men averaged around 21.8 with a ceiling near 25, while pre steroid era champions averaged above that, which tells you the ceiling is a threshold rather than a wall.

Your body fat measurement is the weak link

FFMI depends entirely on knowing your lean mass, which depends on knowing your body fat percentage. A DEXA scan is accurate to within a point or two. A visual estimate can be off by six. That error carries straight through into your FFMI.

Around 18 to 20 is average for an untrained man, 20 to 22 reflects solid training, and above 22 indicates substantial muscle development. Context matters more than the number, particularly your frame size and the accuracy of your body fat measurement.

Is an FFMI over 25 impossible naturally?

No, though it is uncommon. The often quoted figure of 25 came from research where it captured the vast majority of natural men, but pre steroid era champions exceeded it. Large framed individuals with excellent genetics can surpass it naturally.

How accurate is FFMI?

Only as accurate as your body fat measurement, which is the dominant source of error. A DEXA scan gives a tight result, while a visual estimate can shift your FFMI by more than a full point in either direction.

What is the difference between FFMI and normalized FFMI?
